"These 30 drawings on A2 paper were all done on-the-spot while on holiday in several contrasting countries (Iceland, Scotland, Finland, India, Namibia, Spain, Egypt, Greece, ...) The idea is always to capture the feeling of a place, without planning but seizing the moment. Each drawing takes about 40 minutes - longer and it gets spoiled. I choose the everyday life of countries rather than the big set piece tourist scenes.
"My other work includes Cambridge drawings and linocuts, especially Mill Road. I rent studio space at St Barnabas Press which is an inspiring place for making friends and learning new techniques." - Sam Motherwell
Barton Hargreaves, the newly announced first winner of the Originals 09 St Barnabas Publishing Award, has been selected for a new public artwork commission. The new work, titled ‘In Situ’, will be on show from March 2009 on the front of the Jerwood Space building in London. This project is the result of Jerwood Space's participation in SOWF's Street Genius programme. SOWF (some other way forward) is a project sponsored and supported by the South Bank and Bankside Cultural Quarter which aims to put young people at the heart of the arts.
About the St Barnabas Publishing Award: "This year St Barnabas Press has taken part in the 'Originals 09' exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. We decided to offer a prize to promote an up-and-coming printmaker, and have awarded a publishing prize to Barton Hargreaves, who accepted the prize in a ceremony at the opening. It was very difficult to choose an outright winner, but Barton's work showed a combination of unique approach and interesting subject matter for the process of printing. We are looking forward to making a co-published collaborative edition with him in the near future." - James Hill

Stanley Donwood and James Hill have been working over the last three months on photo-etchings using copper hydrocoat - the results have been very fine. They have produced ten images printed on Imperial Moulin du Gue. Donwood's superb images of climate change are warnings of our fragile existence, and the earth's peril, using strong symbolic motifs of his own making.
Stanley's work is exhibiting at the Lazarides Gallery, Soho, London from Fri 15th June to Sat 14th July.
